Of the 255 deaths involving COVID-19 in Week 40, 70.2% (179 deaths) had this recorded as the underlying cause of death, which was a greater proportion when compared with Week 39 (66.2%).This was an increase in all deaths compared with the week ending 29 September 2023 (Week 39), when the number of all-cause deaths registered was 9,979 COVID-19 accounted for 231 of these deaths (2.3%).In the week ending 6 October 2023 (Week 40), 10,103 deaths were registered in England and Wales 255 of these deaths mentioned novel coronavirus (COVID-19), accounting for 2.5% of all deaths.
